Chevron, Shell and others flare 188 bn cf of gas in Nigeria
Chevron Nigeria, Shell Petroleum Development Company [SPDC] and Nigerian Agip Oil Corporation (NAOC) have been found
to be responsible for flaring 188.02 bn cf of gas in the country between July and September this year.
Other oil companies caught in the act, according to the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), include Addax
Petroleum Development Company, Mobil Producing Unlimited and Total Upstream.
The volume of the gas flare represents 92 % of 204.37 bn cf of the product flared during the period under review.
Director of the agency, Billy Agah, who disclosed this during DPR's quarterly media briefing in Lagos, said 24 oil
companies in Nigeria were investigated during the period under review out of which 6 were found wanting.
The agency's helmsman however said DPR granted application for temporary flare permit to Total Upstream and Allied
Energy during the period.
According to Agah, attribution of gas production to oil producing state was carried out during the period in
view.
"A total estimate of 338.10 was produced within the boundary of the oil producing states. Rivers state emerges as the
highest gas producers while Abia state was the latest." He further said a number of gas injection projects performed
below average as they injected less than 50 % of their installed capacity in the third quarter.
