Sept. 8, 1998 Azerbaijan's Caspian oil will be transported by pipeline running from Baku to the Turkish city of Ceyhan in 5 to 6 years, Azeri President Geidar Aliyev has said.
"We will convince international oil companies of the advisability of transporting oil to world markets via Baku and the Turkish Mediterranean complex at Ceyhan," Aliyev said.
The only present-day alternative to the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline as a Baku-Supsa route, he said.
That is "a small pipeline which we are constructing. It can be put into operation at the beginning of next year. In terms of length, the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline is second to none," according to him.
The cost of Baku-Ceyhan pipeline stands at $ 2 billion. It is 1,710 km long and will have a capacity of 55 mm to 60 mm tpy.
The pipeline is expected to run through Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey.
The selection of a final route lies with the Azeri International Operational Company (AIOC).
