Russia to build refinery in Iran
Iran and Russia have signed a contract for Russia to build an oil and petrochemical refinery in the Chahbahar free
trade and industrial zone of Southeast Iran.
The agreement was signed by Chahbahar's managing director, Siavosh Samiei, and officials from the Society of Retirees
of the Russian Federation.
The contract is in line with the free trade zone's efforts to attract foreign investment. The two sides also agreed
on direct co-operation in the areas of exports, imports and joint investments in various industrial activities,
including stone cutting and commercial fishing at the port of Chahbahar.
Given the geographical importance of Chahbahar, the Russians voiced readiness for bilateral co-operation in building
rail links, as well as oil and gas pipelines in the free zone.
Iran and Russia also pressed for immediate partnership in the transit of goods to the Central Asian states, via
Chahbahar.
