Foreign investors discriminate against Azerbaijani employees
An Azerbaijani labour advocate complained that foreign oil companies did not treat their local employees fairly. For example, said Mirvari Gakhrimanly, chairwoman of the Committee for the Rights of Oil Industry Workers, foreign investors working at Azerbaijani oil and gas deposits tend to pay their local employees much less.
On average, she said, Azerbaijani specialists working for foreign companies are paid $ 600-1200 per month, while
specialists from the Middle East receive $ 5,000-6,000 per month and specialists from Great Britain receive $
8,000-12,000 per month.
Moreover, she remarked, underpaid Azerbaijani specialists have no way of lobbying for their own interests since local
employees of foreign oil companies are not allowed to become members of trade unions. Foreign investors discriminate
against their Azerbaijani employees, she declared.
