President Nursultan Nazarbayev and Gazprom chairman Rem Vyakhirev have discussed ways of improving Kazakh-Russian co-operation in the gas sector.
Russia and Kazakhstan have "huge reserves of power resources", which "should be used to yield profits to the owners of gas", the head of Gazprom said. Despite this, he thinks that the neighbouring states are "on the verge of running out of fuel in a year's time". He explained that both sides "had not been able to distribute the fuel correctly over the last few years".
"We may find ourselves in an unpleasant situation," he said. Vyakhirev said that options for Kazakhstan-Russian co-operation in the gas sector would be drawn up by the next meeting which is expected to be held at the end of September.
