Large gas discovery in Norwegian Sea

Sept. 8, 1997 Norway recently discovered a large natural gas reserve of 300 billion cubic meters in the Norwegian Sea, which would be the second largest gas field in the country.
The gas field, called Orm en Lange, lies under 1,000-meter-deep waters in the central part of the Norwegian Sea. The Norwegian government and several oil-tapping companies will jointly extract the gas.
Before the discovery of the Orm en Lange gas field, Norway had announced the discovery of a smaller natural gas reserve in the Norwegian Sea in January. The already-discovered largest gas field in Norway is Troll, with the reserves of 1.3 trillion cubic meters.
So far, the total gas reserves discovered by Norway in the North Sea, the Norwegian Sea and the continental shelf of the Barents Sea stand at 3.3 trillion cubic meters.
Norway exported 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas to other European countries in 1996. The export in 2000 is estimated at 70 bn cm.
