According to Shell executive Christian Balmes, Shell is ready to take responsibility for the consequences the sinking off France of the Ievoli Sun tanker. Balmes says the company is very concerned about the potential risks from the product and will make all facilities available to the French authorities, and company experts are on the spot.
He says there is currently a minor leak in one of the 10 tanks of styrene and it may create a small, low-risk slick 300 to 400 metres across -- the Ievoli Sun was also carrying 2,000 tons of non-toxic chemicals for Exxon Mobil.
