ScottishPower appoints Charles Miller Smith as new Chairman
ScottishPower, a leading UK multi-utility, announced the appointment of Charles Miller Smith as its new non-executive
Chairman from April 1, 2000, succeeding Murray Stuart who will retire on March 31, 2000 following the completion of
the merger with PacifiCorp.
Under the eight-year Chairmanship of Mr. Stuart, 66, ScottishPower has been transformed from a Scottish regional
electricity company into one of the world's top ten investor-owned utilities. The acquisitions of Manweb, Southern
Water and PacifiCorp, and the successful flotation of Thus are among the most significant achievements.
Mr Stuart, who announced his planned retirement at the last Annual General Meeting, said: "It has been a great
privilege and pleasure to serve ScottishPower at such an exciting stage of its development. I am completely confident
the Company will continue its great progress."
Mr Miller Smith, 60, who joined ScottishPower as Deputy Chairman in August 1999 and is Chairman of ICI, said:
"ScottishPower has made outstanding advances under Murray Stuart's guidance and I hope to make my own contribution to
the Company's future as it meets the challenges of the years ahead."
Charles Miller Smith was appointed Chairman of ICI in April last year, having served as CEO from 1995. He previously held a number of top executive posts in Unilever. Mr Miller Smith, who is also a non-executive Director of HSBC, was educated at Glasgow Academy and St Andrews University.
