German gas sales remained stable in 2002 compared with 2001, latest figures by the country's umbrella group for gas and water, the BGW, showed. Sales amounted to 935 bn kWh to households and industrial users as well as power plants.
But in the first quarter of 2003, gas sales have risen by about 14 % because of colder temperatures.

About 18 % of gas is sourced from within Germany, while 31 % comes from Russia, 25 % from Norway, 19 % from he Netherlands and the UK and Denmark deliver 7 %. The BGW said current resources would be enough for another 150 years.
Last year, more than 300,000 German households have changed their heating source to gas, bringing the percentage of households which heat with gas to 17.1 %, compared with 16.8 % last year. About a third (32.2 %) of industrial consumers use gas for their energy needs, said the group.
