Germany welcomes permission to build offshore wind park
Germany's Environment Minister Jurgen Trittin welcomed the second approval to build an offshore wind park in the
German North Sea. "This is an important step for the further expansion of wind energy use on sea," said
Trittin.
The wind park Butendiek, to be built 35 km west of Sylt, now has permission to build a total of 300 MW outside of the
12 sea mile zone. Germany's government plans to increase the share of wind power to at least 25 % within the next
three decades.
The government said it expects at least 500 MW of wind plant to be built by 2006 in the Baltic and North Sea. By
2010, the government expects to see about 2,000-3,000 MW built.
In the long term, by 2030, about 20,000-25,000 MW should be possible, said the ministry, equalling about 15 % of
Germany's demand when compared with 1998.
