Endesa and Elecnor to build marine wind farms in Spain

Endesa has announced an agreement with compatriot Elecnor to jointly develop wind-generating energy projects off Spain's coasts.
Endesa said that its Endesa Congeneracion y Renovables affiliate and Enerfin-Enervento, which is part of the Elecnor Group, have created a joint venture company called the Cape Trafalgar Marine Wind Consortium. Endesa said that the venture will better position both companies, which have previously developed land-based projects, in developing so-called wind farms.

Spain's marine coastal areas are suitable for wind farms because the sea is relatively shallow and installing towers supporting the turbines are less expensive, according to Endesa. The potential wind capacity is 3,000 MW, or about one-quarter the energy of wind farms operating on the mainland, it added.
The venture is initially seeking to build wind turbines off of Spain's southern coasts.
