Esso Argentine to open new refinery

Feb 26, 1997 01:00 AM

Exxon's Argentine unit, Esso SAPA, will open a new refinery to improve the output and quality of oil products and enhance exports to Argentina's Mercosur partners, a top company official said."The new plant will be inaugurated between April and May at the port of Campana," Esso told. Campana, 50 miles (80 km) North of Buenos Aires, is a port on the Parana river, part of the Mercosur waterway. Mercosur is a customs union formed by Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay. Hess said the new plant will have a hydrotreatment capacity of 1,100 cmpd and will be devoted basically to produce unleaded gasoline. The company, with an oil products domestic market share of around 18 %, already has a hydrotreatment plant in Campana with a capacity of 1,600 cmpd. The new plant is part of an investment plan Esso launched in 1993 at a growing pace that reached about $ 100 mm last year, a level it expects to hold through the end of the century. It has invested $ 350 mm so far. It will be inaugurated together with a state-of-the-art computer controlled refining system.
