Chile faces 5.8 % chance of energy deficit in 2009
Chile faces an energy squeeze in 2009 with a 5.8 % probability of an energy deficit, Bernardo Larrain Matte, CEO of
generator Colbun said in a presentation, citing a study from the Centre of Public Studies (CEP).
The energy squeeze will result from the fact that two-thirds of the 2.72 GW capacity to be installed from 2007-10
will begin operations toward the end of the period, he said, speaking in Santiago at an energy conference hosted by
industrialists' association Sofofa.
The 5.8 % probability of deficit, however, assumes projects will come online as scheduled. If the projects are
delayed six months, the probability of deficit is 20 %, whereas if the delay is 12-18 months, it rises to 30 %.
Larrain said backup diesel-fired generators planned for emergencies could be installed within 8-12 months.
Chilean energy regulator CNE has identified 25 areas throughout the country where backup plants could be installed to
supply some 2.00 GW.
Chile experienced a 7 % annual growth in installed capacity from 1990-2006 and the same is expected through 2020,
with 5.5 % as an alternative, Larrain said.
