Mexico's state power utility seeks bids for LNG plant

Mexico's state power utility, the Federal Electricity Commission, said it is seeking bids for a LNG plant on the country's Gulf coast. The commission said it is seeking offers to supply 425 mm cfpd (12 mm cmpd) of gas as of January 2006.
The commission said the winner of the 15-year contract will build, operate and maintain the regasification plant at Altamira, a growing industrial site on Mexico's Gulf coast. Bids will open in April.

The commission is seeking to secure gas supplies for combined-cycle electricity plants, which are the mainstay of its generation expansion plans.
LNG, or LNG, is natural gas condensed at very low temperatures into liquid form for shipping purposes. Interest in importing it into Mexico grew during the gas price spike of 2000, when natural gas in North America reached $ 10 per mm British thermal units. Since then, a number of energy concerns have drawn up plans to build terminals on Mexico's Gulf and Pacific coasts.
