Eletronorte to invest $ 500 mm in Amazonas thermo plant
Brazilian federal power company Eletronorte plans to invest $ 500 mm with a private sector partner to build and
operate a natural gas-fired plant in Amazonas state, the company said.
The plant will have installed capacity of 500-600 MW. Eletronorte opened in December 2008 a public call to select a
partner and plans to create a special purpose company to manage the project.
The plant will be fuelled by federal energy company Petrobras's Urucu-Coari-Manaus natural gas pipeline, which is
scheduled to start operations by September 2009.
The 661 km natural gas pipeline's initial flow capacity will be 5.5 mm cmpd with investments totalling reais 3.5 bn
($ 1.5 bn). The plant's first generator is due to go online in mid-2010.
Eletronorte will select its partner by February, which will have a 51 % stake in the enterprise. The federal company
will hold the remaining 49 %.
The special purpose company also will be responsible for the development of the plant's 230 kV transmission system.
