El Paso to construct new power plant in Rio de Janeiro

The Rio de Janeiro state has been benefited by new investments in the thermal electric power generation. Since the beginning of the energy rationing program, two natural gas fuelled thermal electric facilities were inaugurated in the state, adding 700 MW to the system.
Until 2005, six new projects start up, adding other 4,300 MW and increasing the participation of the state from the current 76 % to 81 %.

The US El Paso, who have projects in five Brazilian states, concentrates its efforts in Rio de Janeiro. Besides Macae Merchant, inaugurated by late 2001, the company currently negotiates the construction of Paracambi Merchant. The Macae Merchant, was inaugurated with a capacity of 350 MW but will reach its maximum capacity, of 870 MW, in June.
