Petrobras' investments in the areas of new power generation go well beyond its programs in thermoelectric plants. The company is currently investing $ 25 mm per year in feasibility studies related to renewable energy sources. One project is the production of bio diesel, which will be tested over the course of this year.

Later this year, Petrobras will launch a new fuel, B5, which is a mixture of diesel with 5 % bio diesel. The goal is to eventually end imports of diesel. The company is also investing in solar power and biomass projects, as well as constructing three wind powered generation plants.
