EDP seeks to boost Brazilian power output by 24 % by 2012
EDP-Energias de Portugal, the biggest power company in Portugal, aims to increase power generation capacity in Brazil
by 24 % in the next three years, a company executive said.
EDP-Energias do Brasil, the Brazilian unit of the Lisbon-based company, wants to increase power output to 2,116 MW
from 1,702 MW by 2012, Antonio Pita de Abreu, the unit's chief executive officer, said in Sao Paulo.
The company is investing reais 1.1 bn ($ 614 mm) a year through 2012 to develop thermal and wind-power mills. Two-
thirds of the spending will be used to expand the generation segment, a "more predictable" business, Pita de Abreu
said.
"The plan is to grow in generation," he said. "While in the generation business you work to make more money, in the
distribution you work to not lose money."
EDP and MPX Energia are building a 720-MW thermal power plant in north-eastern Brazil in Ceara state. The coal-fired
plant is expected to be completed in 2011.
EDP also has 300 MW of wind-power projects in the southern states of Espirito Santo and Rio Grande do Sul, Pita de
Abreu said.
