Michael Baker acquires GeoResearch
Oct. 1, 1998 Michael Baker Corporation announced the acquisition of GeoResearch and the creation of Baker
GeoResearch.
This entity combines the historic market position of Baker in geospatial information technology services with the
innovative technology development of GeoResearch -- the first company to fully integrate global positioning systems
(GPS) and geographic information systems (GIS) in the mid-1980s.
With projected 1998 revenues of $ 20 mm, Baker GeoResearch is uniquely positioned to serve a rapidly growing GPS
market which, according to the US Department of Commerce, is projected to grow world-wide by an average of 25 %
yearly over the next 5 years to $ 16 bn.
GeoResearch, Inc., is a leading provider of GPS and GIS mapping and automated vehicle locating technology (AVL), and
the developer of the GeoLink(R) GPS/GIS mapping system. The company also provides real-time GIS field data collection
services to the utility, transportation and telecommunication industries.
Dr. Douglas Richardson, formerly president of GeoResearch, will serve as vice president- business development of
Baker GeoResearch. "Our GPS/GIS technology is transforming the map into a dynamic tool for managing enterprise-wide
operations," Richardson said, "allowing us to advance the Mapping to Manage(TM) concept of the technology introduced
by GeoResearch during the past decade."
According to John Voycik, general manager of Baker GeoResearch, "We have created a company with a total capability to
provide the full range of geospatial information technologies to improve our customer's business processes. Baker
GeoResearch is poised to address the emerging markets in mobile computing, AVL systems and enterprise-wide,
geospatially referenced business solutions."
