Ukraine's discovery of Serpent Island deposits conflicts with Romania
Ukraine's discovery of oil and gas deposits near Serpent Island conflicts with Romanian interests. Bucharest has
already sent a note to Kiev to protest against the drilling of a well in the Black Sea.
Romania believes that Ukraine has no right to launch economic activities in this region. Kiev, for its part, says
that prospecting is being conducted on Serpent Island, which does not contradict bilateral agreements which are
currently in force.
Deposits of 10 mm tons of oil and 10 bn cm of gas were discovered near the island. The oil discovered is of very high
quality. At the same time, the Romanians have already been exploiting an oil deposit to the west of Serpent Island,
and the fuel is being pumped through a pipeline to the Romanian port of Constanta.
The fuel is located at a depth of 2.5 km under the Black Sea's waters.
