Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan reach natural gas and water accord
The Kyrgyz republic will receive the required volume of natural gas from Uzbekistan thanks to an agreement reached
between the Kyrgyz and Uzbek inter-governmental commission.
The Kyrgyz prime minister has said that in accordance with the agreement on joint use of energy and water resources
signed in December 2000, Uzbekistan is to supply 300 mm cm of gas to the republic until 30 March 2002, and it is also
to supply fuel oil and fuel to the Bishkek and the Osh heating plants.
The Kyrgyz government agreed to buy 532 mm kWh of electricity in the winter from Uzbekistan to pay off its debt to
Uzbekistan. Only on this condition, will Uzbekistan receive a sufficient amount of water from Kyrgyzstan in the
irrigation period of 2002.
Consequently, the Kyrgyz republic's people will be supplied with natural gas. However, the debt to be paid by
Kyrgyzgaz to Uzbekistan is still to be settled. It is worth about $ 2 mm at the moment.
