Russia and Turkmenistan to cooperate in energy sector
Russia and Turkmenistan are determined to promote comprehensive cooperation in the oil and gas sector, in the transportation of energy resources. The signing of an agreement between the governments of the two countries will be a concrete step in this direction. It envisages deliveries of gas from Turkmenistan to Russia on a long-term basis and the implementation of joint projects in this domain.
This is pointed out in the Russo-Turkmen communique, which was signed on the results of President Saparmurad
Niyazov's working visit to Moscow and on his talks at the Kremlin with President Vladimir Putin. The heads of the two
states stressed their determination to boost mutual investments by setting up joint economic structures in the
priority sectors of the two countries, to step up cooperation in sphere of water conservancy, to develop transport
systems, and to effect long-term deliveries of cotton fibre to Russia on mutually advantageous terms.
The presidents issued an instruction to hold the first meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic
Cooperation in the first quarter of this year.
