For the last two years, the activity of Canadian firms in Russia has significantly increased after the financial
crisis of 1998.
The activity has strengthened after an official delegation, headed by the Prime Minister of Canada Jean Chretien,
visited Russia in February 2002.

Hunt) there were lots of business representatives of Canada and Russia. The hall of 60 people was full.
The meeting started with a short speech of Mr Dhaliwal, Minister of Natural Resources of Canada, on the topic of the
conference "Canada and Russia: Opening doors for natural resources cooperation"
"It was an optimistic speech of an industry insider, who believes in the development of the Russian Canadian
cooperation," the director of the Information Agency Neftegaz.RU, Mr Vyazimskiy, noticed.
Mr Dhaliwal informed the participants about his meetings with the Ministers of Energy and Natural Resources and other
representatives of the government of the Russian Federation. He also mentioned the aims of the Canadian
government.
Although Canada is a country with incredible high social benefits for its people, even in his speech the "industrial
minister" (Mr Dhaliwal who also leads the energy sector), mentioned again the necessity of increasing social
benefits, particularly for lone people.
Talking about the development of the relations with Russia, Mr Dhaliwal mentioned the interest to the oil and gas
