Rebels damage two gas pipelines in Burma
An ethnic rebel army in military-ruled Burma has damaged two gas pipelines in recent weeks. A gas pipeline in
south-eastern Mon state was partly damaged by explosives.
It was said that those responsible left behind the flag of the New Mon State Party, a former ethnic rebel group which
has already made peace with the Junta.
The government believes, however, that the Karen National Union was behind the attack. The KNU is one of a few
remaining rebel groups fighting an independence campaign against the military government in Rangoon.
A suspect was arrested after a pipeline outside Pa-an, the capital of eastern Karen state, was "slightly damaged" on
March 29. The suspect admitted the work had been carried out by another division of the KNU.
