The State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision (SBQTS) of China recently promulgated a set of new standards on car exhaust emissions.
The new standards will become effective as of January 1, 2000 in an attempt to allow a longer period of preparation for existing car producers.
The new standards are made according to the car exhaust regulations of the UN Economic Commission for Europe and exhaust emissions of new cars in China will be similar to the standard of European countries in the early 1990s upon operation of the new standards.
China now has approximately 13 mm motor vehicles, and the number is expected to exceed 20 mm by 2000.
Urban air quality reports regularly released by the State Environmental Protection Administration show that auto emissions have become a main source of air pollution in some major cities.
Environmental experts estimate that the annual emission of harmful gas by motor vehicles across China can reach tens of millions of tons.
