Sinopec heads list of 100 most competitive firms
Petrochemical giant Sinopec has been named the mainland's most competitive publicly listed enterprise in 2003. China
Unicom, the smaller of the country's two mobile phone network operators, was runner-up in a list of the top 100
mainland firms.
The list was compiled by a team from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and China Business, a leading financial
newspaper published by the Institute of Industrial Economy.
Researchers analysed data and information from 1999 to 2002 on some 1,200 mainland companies listed in the A- and
B-share markets, China Business said. Some of those chosen, including Sinopec and China Unicom, also issue H shares
in Hong Kong. Third on the list is Shanghai-listed Baoshan Iron and Steel (Baosteel).
Huaneng Power International, which is also listed in Hong Kong, ranks No 4, followed by Shenzhen-listed liquor
producer Yibin Wuliangye, which is based in Yibin, Sichuan. In sixth place was Shanghai-listed home appliance
manufacturer Qingdao Haier, which is based in Shandong.
