Venezuela's 1500 MW wind power development plan

Nov 12, 2010 12:00 AM

Three wind farms, which will generate almost 100 MW, are to be built on Venezuela’s Margarita Island. Although the date when work will begin has not been released, according to a report by Business News Americas. Up to now, Venezuela, which remains heavily dependent on oil, has shown little interest in developing wind power infrastructure. Recently, however, the Venezuelan government has made it clear it wants wind to play an important role in producing power in the country.

Hence, it has announced its intention to build 1500 MW of installed wind capacity within the next five years. A significant proportion of the 1500 MW is expected to be developed by Petroleos de Venezuela, the government-owned oil company. The new wind farms on Margarita Island will follow the 100 MW Paraguana project, which is set to become Venezuela’s first operating wind farm. Construction of the Paraguana wind facility is expected to begin in July 2011.
