Georgia and Turkey sign energy agreement

Jan 20, 2012 12:00 AM

Georgia and Turkey have signed an agreement on transboundary electricity trade. The agreement was signed by Georgian Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alexander Khetaguri and his Turkish counterpart Taner Yildiz.
The 400-kilovolt electric transmission lines Akhaltsikhe-Borcha are under construction within the framework of the power project. The project envisages the construction of an 500-kilovolt and 400-kilovolt electric transmission phase.

A 700-MW converter will be mounted, which will allow the export of electricity produced in Georgia. The project budget is EUR 300 mm.
After signing the project, Khetaguri said Georgia will export electricity to Turkey and Europe via new electric transmission lines since this May.

"We are building electric transmission lines with Turkey," Khetaguri noted.
"400-kilovolt electric transmission lines will connect Borcha and Akhaltsikhe. Today we have signed an international agreement on transboundary trade with Turkey, which will regulate energy export from Georgia to Turkey."
