Asian Americans overtake Hispanics as fastest-growing immigrant group

Jun 22, 2012 12:00 AM

According to the Pew Research Centre, Asian Americans now outnumber Hispanics as the fastest-growing immigrant group in the US.
Since 2000, Asian American immigration rates steadily climbed from 20 % to nearly 40 %, while the percentage of Hispanic immigrants dropped from 60 % to about 30 % of all American immigrants.

Asian Americans come from a long history of low-wage, low-skilled labour. Today, they are the best-educated and highest-income racial group in the US Pew surveys report (see ).
They are more satisfied than the general public with their lives, finances and the direction of the country, and they place more value than other Americans do on marriage, parenthood, hard work and career success, according to a comprehensive new nationwide survey by the Pew Research Centre.

The recent rise of Asian American immigrants caught the attention of Stephen Colbert, who satirically explores the “Asian immigration threat”.
