First road to link Oman with Saudi Arabia

Mar 14, 2013 12:00 AM

The first road linking Oman and Saudi Arabia will open by the end of year, creating new trade opportunities between the countries, the Muscat Daily reported.

The route will cut through Saudi Arabia’s Empty Quarter – one of the biggest sand deserts in the world – and help boost the economy of Oman’s Dhahirah region, officials said.

The Oman section of the road is completed but unexpected soft soil has delayed construction and increased the cost in Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi portion of the project will link to the Khorais-Bathaa Road via Shayba and Umm Zamoul.

Presently, the only road connecting the Gulf neighbours is via the UAE.

It is intended that most trade between Oman and Saudi Arabia will use the new road, making it quicker and reducing paperwork, while it will also encourage new trade opportunities.
