Venezuela state oil company PDVSA's 680MW Termocarabobo II thermoelectric plant in Carabobo state is operational.

The dual fuel (gas-diesel) plant in Juan José Mora city - developed with Chinese firm Sinohydro and financed with US$1.116 bn from the Chinese-Venezuelan joint investment fund - will add the 680 MW in its first phase to the national SEN grid via four gas and diesel turboelectric generation units, each contributing 170 MW.

The second phase will involve construction of a 320 MW combined cycle power plant for an estimated US$880 mm.

According to the release, 2,800 MW have been added to SEN since Venezuela's electric crisis of 2009, of which 900 MW are utilized by the oil industry.

Termocarabobo II is expected to benefit more than 224,000 households.
