São Paulo water utility Sabesp is planning to invest 10.3bn reais (US$3.93bn) in waterworks in 2014-18, according to data from the company's website.

For 2015-18, the company allocated 4.15bn for potable water supply projects and 5.98bn reais for sewerage service projects, of which 3.96bn reais will go towards sewage collection and 2.02bn reais to sewage treatment.

In comparison, the overall waterworks budget for 2011-14 was 9.94bn reais and for 2007-10, 7.19bn reais.

The 2015-18 budget, however, does not include Sabesp's plan to redirect water from the Paraíba do Sul river in Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais states to São Paulo state's Cantareira water system, which is currently suffering from drought conditions.

São Paulo governor Geraldo Alckmin signed an agreement with Rio de Janeiro governor Luiz Fernando Pezão and Minas Gerais governor Alberto Pinto Coelho in November to kick off the project this year. Investment is estimated at some 500mn reais.
