Jun 03, 2016 12:00 AM

One of Liberia's biggest developmental partners, the European Union (EU) has disclosed plans to construct a modern hydropower plant in four locations in one of the three counties of western Liberia, Gbarpolu.

In fulfillment of this project, the Gbarpolu County Legislative Caucus headed by Senate Pro-Tempore, Armah Jallah is expected to lead a delegation from the EU headed by its Ambassador, Tiina Intelmann and the head of section operation Stafano Scesano Ellaro to the county today for assessment.

The team, according to a release issued Thursday in Monrovia from the office of the Pro-Tempore, will travel to four sites possible for the construction of the hydropower plant to include Mavo River in Bopulu and Maher River at Sawmill between Bomi and Gbarpolu among others.

According to the release, the negotiation leading to the construction of the hydropower plant was initiated by Senate Pro-Tempore and Senator of Gbarpolu County, Armah Jallah.

"The decision to undertake such initiative was triggered by the continuous darkness his people continue to live in and that he wants his county have access to electricity like in other counties," the release said.

"Gbarpolu County has the requisite natural environment that can facilitate the construction of a hydropower plant and that upon its completion the entire county will be electrified, and will conversely attract investors and boost business activities and provide job opportunities for the locals as in other counties," the release stressed.

The release also maintained that the project is intended to adequately address the electricity problem facing the county and as a means of contributing to the national growth and development of the county.
