Vestas lands 99MW Mexico wind turbine order

Vestas has won an order to supply 30 3.3MW turbines for two wind farms in Mexico's Tamaulipas state for Isolux de México.

The turbines will be installed at La Mesa and Ciudad Victoria wind farms, both with 49.5MW capacity. They will be delivered in the last quarter of this year and the farms are due to enter operations in 3Q16, the Danish wind turbine manufacturer said in a press release.

The contract with Isolux comprises supply, installation and commissioning of the turbines, in addition to a 15-year management service agreement. The value of the contract was not revealed.

The turbine order is Vestas' second for Mexico this month, following the announcement on May 8 of an order to supply the 149MW Tres Mesas project that is being developed by Oak Creek Energy and built by Spanish firm Abengoa.

La Mesa and Ciudad Victoria are expected to produce around 367,000MWh/y, equivalent to the electricity consumption of 760,000 people.

The V112-3.3MW wind turbine is a variant of Vestas' 3MW platform aimed at improving energy production on medium wind sites.

"With this new wind farm, Vestas strengthens its position in the Mexican market and confirms its commitment to developing the wind energy sector in this country," said Marco Graziano, president of Vestas Mediterranean.

In an interview in March, Vestas' senior VP of sales for its Mediterranean region, Javier Rodríguez Díez, said the opening up of the Mexican electricity market provides interesting opportunities for the wind power sector, as it is one of the pillars of the energy reform to achieve the country's clean energy goals.

"Mexico has one of the world's biggest wind power resources and we have very encouraging prospects, although it could be difficult harnessing those resources due to the need to develop mechanisms to expand and strengthen the transmission network," he said.

Vestas installed Tamaulipas' first wind farm, the 54MW El Porvenir in 2013 and currently has 406MW in Mexico.
